Man Seriously Injured Following Single Vehicle Crash

On Thursday, July 7, a man from Pine Planes was seriously injured following a single vehicle crash.

According to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened at around 7.30 a.m. at the intersection of Route 199 and Route 308 in the Town of Milan. A 2004 Honda Civic was traveling eastbound on Route 308 when it left the pavement and struck a traffic-light support pole on the south side of the roadway.

The passenger, 25 year old Dominic Russo, was severely entrapped in the vehicle and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, 25 year old Anthony Stoddard of Elizaville was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, a felony, and driving while ability impaired by drugs, which is a misdemeanor.

It is thought that the cause of the accident was fatigue and alleged drug use,

Two Vehicle rollover Leaves Elderly Woman Dead

On Saturday, June 18 one person died in a two vehicle rollover on the Interstate 84 in Fishkill.

According to State police the accident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on the westbound lanes of the Interstate, just east of Exit 13, which intersects Route 9. There was an eyewitness at the scene who said that one car collided with another when it was trying to cut over, but crossed too close to the car it was passing and the car behind hit it.

The car in front spun, flipped over the guardrail and disappeared while the car behind also flipped and slid along the highway on its roof before stopping,

The eyewitness then found the car which had gone over the embankment which was occupied by a single female, who was from Poughquag and in her 80s. The woman later died.

The other vehicle was occupied by an adult and child and they were both taken to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, where their condition is not known.

Man From Wappingers Falls Seriously Injured in Single Vehicle Accident

Late on Sunday night, May 16 a man from Wappingers Falls was seriously injured following a single vehicle accident.

According to New York State Police, the accident happened shortly before midnight when 33 year old Louis C. Barbieri was traveling southbound on Route 9D. At this stage, it is not known why, but his vehicle left the roadway and slammed into a utility pole near the area of Magnolia Drive.

Barbieri had to be extricated from his vehicle by fire crews and he was then air lifted by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in a serious condition although exact details of his injuries are unknown.

The crash is currently under investigation and the police are asking for witnesses.

Car Smashed Head on Into Scooter

Early on Saturday morning, April 10, a car smashed head on into a scooter and then burst into flames in Queens.

According to police, the accident happened at 3.45 a.m. in the morning at Cooper Avenue and 73rd Street. Robert Loivo, aged 38 was driving an Acura MDX and he swerved into the opposite eastbound lane when he was traveling west on Cooper Avenue. As he swerved he smashed into a 21 year old man who was driving his scooter east on Cooper Avenue.

The victim, who has not yet been named, was found lying in the road with severe body trauma. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital where he is said to be in a critical condition.

Loivo, of Poughkeepsie, who was uninjured, was issued a breathalyzer on the scene and taken into custody where he was subsequently charged with assault, reckless driving, and driving while ability impaired by alcohol.

Poughkeepsie Police Officer Injured in Head on Collision

On Wednesday night, March 16, a City of Poughkeepsie police officer was injured in a head on collision.

According to City of Poughkeepsie Police, the accident happened at around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Main and North/South Bridge streets. The unnamed police officer was on patrol, heading east on Main but not responding to an emergency. At the same time, a vehicle was travelling downhill west on main when the driver lost control, possibly due to the slick road following rain.

The cruiser was struck head on. The female driver and male passenger did not appear to be injured and both declined medical assistance. The police offer was transported to a local hospital for evaluation although his injuries are not thought to be serious.

It is not expected that any charges will be brought in relation to the accident, but it is still under investigation.

Man Killed in Drunken Driving Crash

On Saturday evening, January 16, a man was killed in a drunken driving crash.

According to state police, the incident happened on Route 9 when 22 year old Andrew Casey was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer. He went off the road in Columbia County town and then hit several trees followed by a utility pole and his vehicle came to rest at the bottom of an embankment.

His passenger, 28 year old Andrew Clarke of Red Hook, was partially ejected and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers stated that Casey of Staten Island was intoxicated so he was taken into custody and taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie with non life threatening injuries. He was then charged with felony vehicular manslaughter and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. He was held without bail in the Columbia County Jail.

Clarke was a graduate of Red Hook High School who served two years in the U.S. Navy and was working as a welder for UBS in Red Hook as well as being a personal trainer.

Two Car Accident Leaves Child Seriously Hurt

On Sunday, April 26, there was a two car accident which left a child seriously injured.

According to Poughkeepsie Police Department, the accident happened at around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Taft Avenue and Maple Street Extension on State Route 44 and 55.

A 2010 Mazda, which was being driven by operated by a 21 year old female from Dover Plains, was traveling southbound on Taft Avenue when it collided with a westbound 2004 Chrysler Town and Country, whose driver was a 41 year old woman from Poughkeepsie.

The driver of the Mazda was alone in the car and was taken to the Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital of Westchester Medical Center with minor injuries.

The driver of the Chrysler also sustained minor injuries and she was taken to the same hospital. In the Chrysler were three children, ranging from eight to 13 years of age. Two were taken to Mid-Hudson Regional as well but the eight year old had serious injuries and was flown to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

The investigation is ongoing.

Woman Arrested for Leaving the Scene

On Saturday, April 18 a woman was arrested in Scarsdale for leaving the scene of an accident.

The accident happened just before 10 a.m. at the intersection of Boulevard and Post Road. A 1999 Saab travelling on Post Road hit a 2009 Honda, being driven by a 94 year old Scarsdale man, who was turning left from Boulevard. The driver of the Saab stopped briefly, got out of the car while on a cell phone, and then drove away. She was seen to be headed south on Post Road toward Eastchester.

The driver of the Honda suffered facial lacerations and was taken to White Plains Hospital Center.

Scarsdale police told Eastchester police about the incident and around half an hour later they found the Saab at a Mobil gas station on White Plains Road. Surveillance video at the gas station showed the Saab entering the gas station lot the wrong way and the driver then fleeing on foot. A witness to the accident confirmed that it was the same woman who had fled the scene earlier.

The car was then towed to a police impound lot and police contacted the driver who was 37 year old Jenny Alves from Mount Vernon. Alves surrendered to police later that day along with her lawyer.

She was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, unlicensed driving and third degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Fatal Head on Collision Kills Police Detective

Early on Friday morning there was a fatal head on collision involving a wrong way driver.

According to state police, the accident happened shortly before 4 in the morning in the southbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway when reports of a driver travelling the wrong way were received. Efren Moreano, aged 20, of Yonkers was driving a 2013 Honda Civic northbound in the southbound lanes and he collided with 46 year old Paul E. Duncan in a 2011 Honda Pilot. Duncan was an off duty NYPD detective and he was killed in the crash. Moreano was placed in a medically induced coma at Westchester Medical Center and is currently in a stable condition.

According to police, alcohol and marijuana may have been factors in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing and they are still looking for witnesses.
